Golden Girls Network, a company dedicated to helping adults ages 50+ find roommates, will launch its central Florida affiliate tonight at a free educational workshop in Maitland.
“Shared living offers a great opportunity for residents wishing to remain in their homes as they age,” said Barbara Koehne, Golden Girls Network’s new central Florida regional director who owns a company that helps seniors downsize. “While “The Golden Girls’ sitcom has been off the air for decades, I think the lifestyle portrayed in the show is something that many people here would relish.”
Shared living is on the rise nationally as many struggle with affordable housing in the wake of the recession and the number of unmarried baby boomers grows. According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, approximately 4.8 percent of the 185,000 Orange County residents over the age of 60 live alone.
“We are thrilled to be in an area where so many people move when they are ready to begin the next chapter of their lives,” said Golden Girls Network Founder Bonnie Moore, a national expert in shared living for mature adults. “The companionship and reduced housing costs associated with shared living can make this chapter the best one yet.”
The workshop will take place on Monday, April 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the Art and History Museum of Maitland’s Cottage on Lake Lily located at 701 Lake Lily Drive in Maitland. Participation is free, but advanced registration is recommended by visiting http://goldengirlsnet.staging.wpengine.comevents/golden-girls-network-central-florida-launch/
At the workshop, Moore will answer questions from local residents on how to set up a Golden Girls Home based on her positive experience living with roommates in a 5-bedroom home in Bowie, Maryland. Her answers will draw on her book about shared living, which will be published in a second edition later this spring.
Golden Girls Network is the only nationwide network that helps mature adults find roommates and access the resources they need to make shared living work. More information is available at GoldenGirlsNetwork.com.
