A note from our founder on concerns:
First and foremost…see this as an adventure, as a way of making new friends…as a way of solving some issues for you! Look at the positive side…start with a great attitude and you can make it work, even when small problems arise! If you see this as overwhelming and you notice all the problems first, it will become that way!

ABOUT GOLDEN GIRLS NETWORK

IS GOLDEN GIRLS NETWORK LIMITED TO WOMEN ONLY?
No! The name is deceiving!

Golden Girls Network allows both women and men to join, although we find that there are many more single mature women who would like to participate in shared housing. In some situations, a woman would prefer to have a man as a roommate, or a man would prefer to have a woman, so we provide that opportunity.

We do have an age requirement — a person needs to be 40 years old or older to join our community. To ensure we only serve the mature community, we do require members to provide their birthday (including year) at the time of registration.

ARE GOLDEN GIRLS HOMES ONLY FOR THOSE LIVING INDEPENDENTLY?
Yes. We encourage single mature adults to consider shared housing while they are youthful and energetic and to form Golden Girls homes before health issues arise. For those who require more care than a typical roommate situation, we work to make connections to local non-profits and municipal groups that provide services for older adults.

In addition, we know there are mature adults living alone who would like a roommate so that they can stay in their homes longer. We are establishing a Golden Girls Foundation through which we will offer a program to support situations where a qualified roommate can provide some assistance in exchange for reduced rent.

PICTURES, BIRTHDAY, ADDRESS, GENDER? WHY DO YOU REQUIRE SO MUCH PERSONAL INFORMATION?
Bottom line – the security of our members. It may seem counterintuitive that to provide security, we need more information, but we do. By providing this information, you can feel confident in the profiles of others on the site. Our goal is to reduce (and hopefully avoid altogether) fake accounts that serve only to boost numbers of profiles in the network, but don’t actually help you find a home or a roommate. In addition, by having more complete profiles to browse, you can eliminate housing situations that aren’t right for you while focusing on those that appear to be a strong fit from the start.

We strongly recommend that you look for and support roommate-like websites that require a picture and at least a minimum of verification procedures up front.

If you see a profile that is suspicious, or if you receive a message that makes you uncomfortable, please report it to info@goldengirlsnetwork.com As much as we try to keep the integrity of our site, we are always mindful of your security.

I’M HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY PROFILE. NOW WHAT?
First, be sure you’ve uploaded a photograph. This is required and without one, your profile will not publish to our database without it. This is for your security and protection.

WHY CAN’T I BROWSE MEMBERS WITHOUT JOINING? WHAT IF I PAY TO JOIN AND THERE’S NO ON FOR ME?
While finding no one is possible, our goal is for you to find a great match! And that’s why we require membership. Sometimes finding a match takes time. But the only way for you to find a match (or for someone else to find you) is to be a part of the community. Without requiring registration, we simply don’t know who is out there searching!

But before you join, you can check to see how many members are already in your state – simply use the browsing capability on the home page.

By charging a small fee upfront, we discourage individuals from registering who are not really interested or who are scammers. When you sign up and provide a picture, you know you are meeting others who are as interested as you are!

We encourage our members to have a little patience – remember, your membership is good for six months!

We also encourage you to look at your situation and decide what is reasonable before you sign up. Will you be homeless in three days, and you have two dogs? Understand your own expectations, and whether this is the best way to find a new housing situation or if there is a better way to meet your specific needs. Most people anticipate that they will find a roommate situation within three months. Is that reasonable for you?

We know one of the main drivers of shared housing is cost savings, which is why we keep our membership costs low and often offer discounts to make participation in the network even more affordable.

HOW DO I KNOW IF SHARED LIVING IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Most mature adults looking for roommates start out looking for shared housing because it is more economical. You are usually able to find a nice place to live for much less than it would cost you to live by yourself. It is often a great way to transition when your life is changing – your kids have grown up, you are single again, or you have lost a source of income and must downsize. And some of us would rather spend our money on fabulous vacations, good food, and entertainment!

Other people are more interested in the companionship. Sometimes it gets very lonely when you live alone, and it’s nice to have someone to talk to over a cup of coffee, and someone to share a meal with at home. Shared living residences can provide that camaraderie.

Still others are interested because they are concerned about living alone – what if I fall and can’t get up, what if I have a serious medical issue, what if I need help with a broken-down car? Roommates can be great to provide support as well.

FOR HOMEOWNERS

DO I HAVE TO OWN MY HOME TO REGISTER AS A HOMEOWNER?
No. You can either own your home or be a renter. All you need is an extra bedroom. If you are a renter, you should anticipate staying in your home for at least a year. It would not be fair to a roommate to move in and then have to move again in less than a year.

Some participants would like to find a compatible group and search for a home or senior apartments together. We recommend that one person register as a homeowner and indicate that she is forming a group. In our experience, you need one person as the anchor who brings together a group.

Sometimes we are contacted by people who are interested in joining a co-op community or co-housing. We encourage these communities to post with us, and we can sometimes put you in touch with these communities. It’s all about sharing our lives!

HOW DO I START MY GOLDEN GIRLS HOME?
If the idea of housemates is new to you, we recommend that you take one of the conference call workshops. Each workshop is limited to five individuals and it is always a lively conversation where each person gets to discuss her individual situation. The workshop is held via conference call so that anyone anywhere in the country can participate. It’s a two-hour session once a week for two weeks. The cost is $50 for the workshop, and includes a copy of our electronic book.

If you are not quite ready for the workshop, we suggest that you purchase the book separately, and spend some time thinking about how it might work for you. You could join a workshop later on, or you could start your Golden Girls home immediately.

For additional information on shared living, please visit our Shared Housing Resources page.

HOW DO I FIND THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO LIVE WITH ME?
It’s a new experience – a little bit like family, a little bit like marriage, and a little bit like college roommates. Trust your intuition!

We suggest that you make a list of the attributes that are important to you and develop questions that you can ask that will help you make a selection. We also recommend defining your own “deal breakers” – those characteristics or qualities that simply don’t work for you. Everyone is different and each situation is unique – don’t feel bad if a match doesn’t work out – there’s a home for everyone!

For tips on how to interview, how to advertise your home, and sample roommate agreements, please check out our book. There is tons of great info in there that makes your search and matching process much easier.

WHAT ABOUT SECURITY? HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF THE GOLDEN GIRL I MEET ONLINE IS WHO SHE SAYS SHE IS?
We strongly encourage all homeowners to run a background check on a prospective roommate and also have one run for you! By making this unalterable document available to potential tenants, you give yourself credibility as a landlord as well.

A background check will tell you whether an individual has a criminal conviction in the state where she lives. It will not cover all states or all circumstances. We also recommend that you verify the person’s employment and that you personally speak with her last landlord.

Your prospective roommate will want to know about you too, we suggest that you process a background check for yourself so that you can give it to the roommate and she will be more comfortable getting to know you!

WHAT IF I CAN’T FIND SOMEONE THROUGH GOLDEN GIRLS NETWORK?
Just like dating, finding the right match takes time. That’s why membership in Golden Girls Network is for six months – it’s not simply a single search expecting to find the perfect match immediately. Your match might not be registered today, but shows up next week. We encourage you to take the time to find the right roommates for you.

We also encourage you to market your home through your own networks and communities. Please read our book for more recommendations on this topic.

FOR HOMESEEKERS

HOW DO I FIND THE RIGHT HOME FOR ME?
We suggest that you make a list of the attributes that are important to you and develop questions that will help you make a selection. We also recommend defining your own “deal breakers” – those characteristics or qualities that simply don’t work for you. Everyone is different and each situation is unique – don’t feel bad if a match doesn’t work out – there’s a home for everyone! Our book has a good list of deal breakers and other things to consider.

Also – we recommend starting your search for a new home at least two months before you need to move. And be patient! We know it is hard when you need a place to live, but just like dating, finding the right match for you takes time. That’s why membership to Golden Girls Network is for six months – not simply a single search. Your match might not be registered today, but shows up next week. We encourage you to take the time to find the right housing situation for you.

WHAT ABOUT SECURITY? HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF THE HOMEOWNER I MEET ONLINE IS WHO SHE SAYS SHE IS?
We strongly encourage you to request a copy of the homeowner’s background check – we encourage all homeowners on Golden Girls Network to get one on her and make it available on request. We note that it is very reasonable for a homeowner to ask you to provide one as well.

A background check will tell you whether an individual has a criminal conviction in the state where she lives. It will not cover all states or all circumstances. We also recommend that you personally speak with at last one current or former tenant.

I’M NOT TECHNICALLY SAVVY. DO YOU HAVE RESOURCES TO HELP ME MATCH?
The intention of Golden Girls Network is to be a self-service website. But our regional directors are available to provide support in to women in their home states. And if you or over age 70 or working to help a Golden Girl that needs additional assistance, please stay tuned for details on our soon-to-launch Golden Girls Foundation.
